Tactics

Below is an expanding (and in no specific order) list of tactical considerations, the majority of which are based on games played with the Standard (non-random) game setup.

1. Eliminate the Minefield

It may be beneficial, especially early in the game, to eliminate the opponent’s Minefield, either with a Drone or a Missile.

This facilitates the direct access to the opponent´s General and thus the option to eliminate the General by ramming with a vehicle.

2. Free up Warehouse capacity

To get new weaponry onto the Battlefield, a player should consider always having available Warehouse space. Otherwise, weapons picked from the Grey Market cannot be deployed, creating a situation similar to the one created when picking the Arms Embargo happenstance piece. Obviously, if both Warehouses have been captured, there is no Warehouse space.

As the probability of picking a weapon piece from the Grey Market is between 0% (when all weapons are deployed on the Battlefield) and 70% (when none are), it makes sense to consider this aspect of Endgame.

3. Prepare for Friendly Fire

To reduce the risk of being negatively affected by Friendly Fire, a player may consider the following options:

  1. Spread out vehicle pieces within the range of the player’s own weapons on the Battlefield.
  2. Ensure that a non-fatal option is available (Generals have been known to be killed by Friendly Fire resulting in defeat).
  3. Take into account the current probability of selecting a Friendly Fire happenstance piece from the Grey Market (it may vary from 5.0% to 16.7% over the course of the game).

4. Utilize the Doppelgänger

The Doppelgänger piece is often most effective when the distance between the General and the Doppelgänger on the board is relatively big.

A proven bluffing tactic includes having one player actively move the General around while keeping the Doppelgänger stationary and protected by the Minefield.

5. Be aware of powerful combinations

A Tank combined with a Missile offers the most powerful impact in both offensive and defensive scenarios, and players are advised to pay attention to this.

6. Pay attention to logistics

In some cases, it can be beneficial to establish a fast and efficient weapons supply chain, either by positioning a Warehouse close to a weapon-firing vehicle or by connecting the two with a Truck.

7. Risk management

For a player to avoid any potential negative impact of picking a happenstance piece from the Grey Market, it may be beneficial to establish a setup where a weapon always can be switched between two vehicles and thus fulfilling Step 2 of a completed move.

However, this also eliminates the chance of picking a happenstance piece with a a positive impact.
